Summer in the Cities

Summer in the Cities

There is so much to do if you are sticking around the KW area for the summer. Nearly every weekend there is a great festival or event to attend. My family and I love bumping into people from our community, listening to great music or chomping down on some fantastic food.

We have lots planned this summer, and I wanted to share a couple of my favourite events.

Top 5 Reasons Why Your AC Broke Down

Top 5 Reasons Why Your AC Broke Down

Summer came with a vengeance this year and as a result, we’re getting a lot of emergency calls for broken air conditioning units. No one likes an emergency, so here are some tips and tricks as to why your AC might break down this summer and what you can do to prevent it.
Hot Cat

Regular maintenance to your air conditioner is a must. Similar to going to the doctor, an AC check up can catch things early before they become a problem. Having an Afterglow technician visit your home can prevent time and money from being wasted from something small escalating. Think it’s just your AC that needs maintenance? Your furnace may need to be looked at too.

Dirty Filter

Your air conditioner’s air filter does more than just clean the air; it keeps your AC running efficiently and effectively. A dirty filter can clog the airflow of your HVAC system, causing significant strain on the internal components. In addition, this strain will use more energy, increasing your costs by a noticeable amount. The good news is, you can change your filter by yourself! Check out how.

Broken Thermostat

Sometimes your AC problems are as simple as a broken thermostat. The thermostat senses the temperature of the home and adjusts your HVAC system accordingly. If this feature is broken or even hindered, your air conditioner won’t regulate the temperature of the home, causing one to think their HVAC unit is the problem. Try out EcoBee3 as an alternative to the traditional thermostat.

Old Dirty Coil

Allergy season is here! But if you’re sneezing INSIDE your home, there may be another problem. Your air conditioner consists of an outside unit and an inside coil. The inside coil tends to be wet because it pulls the humidity from your home, and then dust and dirt sticks to it. This dust and dirt and get circulated throughout your home. This is not only detrimental to your health but also takes a toll on your wallet as the HVAC system requires more energy to produce the cool temperatures your home is set to. Allergens may circulate other ways as well: check out how to remove the three most common allergens in your home.

Over Usage

The summer heat came on quick, but that doesn’t mean that air conditioning is the only way to cool your home. Installing ceiling fans and using them during Spring or overnight on cool summer nights will save you money short term (on your hydro bills) and long term (on HVAC repair costs). Check out other times ceiling fans save money.

Humidity Control

Not only does it get really hot during our summers in Southwestern Ontario, it gets really humid too. All that water in the air makes the heat feel really wet and heavy and makes us feel sluggish and sweaty. Humidity control is not only important for your comfort, it’s also important for your health. Too much humidity in the house can cause mould to grow, which can lead to all kinds of health problems.

How can you control humidity in your home this summer to make life more comfortable?

A good quality Air Conditioner in good repair is designed to draw out humidity as well as cooling the air. But if an Air Conditioner isn’t right for you or your home, there are also whole-home humidifiers which work great and are less expensive. Instead of having de-humidifiers in each room, you can have one for the whole house.

Humidity control is part of your overall home health – for your family and the house itself. If you need help with humidity problems in your home, give our experts a call at Afterglow. We are committed to your comfort and well-being. After all, summer is a season to be enjoyed!

Until next time, stay cool and dry!

Ontario ACs

Back when I was a kid, a while back now, there weren’t many families who had Air Conditioning. They were a novelty item during the summers. I remember my friend Mike and I throwing grass clippings into his family Air Conditioner and watching the fan blow the grass into the air. It sure was considered a luxury item, in fact, back then only 12% of homes in Ontario had central Air Conditioning units. Nowadays the figure is more like 80%! Boy have things changed.

Instead of being a big luxury item, central Air Conditioning in homes has become more commonplace as people want to escape the really scorching hot weather during heat waves. Sleeping at night is easier and more comfortable when the air is cool, and we know that sometimes during the summer the air at night isn’t very cool at all. Instead of being a luxury, it feels like Air Conditioning is a necessity.

If you want to service your existing Air Conditioning unit, or if you would like to purchase a new unit for your home before the weather gets really unbearable, call Afterglow for great service and prices.

Until next time, stay cool!
